US Decides to Retire Most Research Chimps: Normal Version
In a landmark decision, the US government is planning to retire all but 50 of the chimpanzees it uses for medical research.
Chimp and human DNA is 98 percent the same and the animals have long been used in often controversial research. However, new technologies mean this is mostly no longer necessary. The government holds around 400 chimpanzees. The retired animals will join more than 150 others in special sanctuaries. The announcement comes soon after the US also decided to place both captive and wild chimps on the endangered species list.
The decision will not affect other types of monkeys such as rhesus macaques, which will still be used for invasive research.
米国政府は、医学研究に用いられるチンパンジーのうち50頭を除く全てを引退させるという画期的な決定を下しました。
チンパンジーと人間のDNAは98％同じであるため、チンパンジーは長い間研究に利用されて頻繁に物議を醸してきました。しかし、最新技術のおかげでチンパンジーはもはやほとんど（研究に）必要ありません。政府は約400頭のチンパンジーを保有しています。引退するチンパンジーは、特別保護区で150頭を超える仲間と一緒に暮らします。この発表が行われる直前、米国は研究施設にいるチンパンジーと野生のチンパンジーの両方を絶滅危惧種のリストに載せることも決定しました。
今回の決定はアカゲザルなど他の種のサルには適用されず、それらのサルは今後も侵襲的研究に利用されます。

The US government has announced it will retire all but 50 of its chimpanzees used for medical research.
Chimp and human DNA is 98 percent the same but new technologies mean they are mostly not required for research. The government has around 400 chimpanzees. The retired animals will join over 150 others in sanctuaries. The US also recently decided to recognize chimpanzees as an endangered species.
Despite the decision about chimps, other types of monkeys will still be used for medical research.

チンパンジーと人間のDNAは98％同じですが、最新技術のおかげでチンパンジーは研究にほとんど必要ありません。政府は約400頭のチンパンジーを保有しています。引退するチンパンジーは、保護区で150頭を超える仲間と一緒に暮らします。また、最近では、米国はチンパンジーを絶滅危惧種に認定することを決めました。
チンパンジーに関する今回の決定にもかかわらず、他の種のサルは今後も医学研究に利用されます。
