Terminally Ill Woman Chooses Death with Dignity: Normal Version
Brittany Maynard has died after taking medication prescribed by her
doctor. The 29 year old had posted a video online announcing her
decision to end her life by choice.
On New Year's Day this year, Maynard was diagnosed with terminal
brain cancer. Knowing she only had half a year to live, Maynard said she
preferred to end her life with dignity. The video sparked controversy
around the world and has been viewed over nine million times. Maynard
moved to Oregon, one of five US states where the process is legal. She
was supported by an organization that advocates for the right to choose
death with dignity.
Euthanasia is legal in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg for
each country’s citizens. Switzerland, however, also allows non-Swiss
nationals to choose euthanasia. This has led to an increase in visitors
seeking help with physician-assisted dying.
